It's back...bigger than ever
The 12th edition of The Law Handbook has been published in hard copy - all 1200 pages of it.There was much lobbying for this to be published as an e-book but to no avail.
Some chapters will be available online on the Find Legal Answers website - stay tuned.
This title is in the Legal Tool Kit at all branches plus lending copies at SU, CA, ME and EN.

To celebrate this month, Cronulla Library is holding two dreamy events. A dream workshop with psychic and dream practitioner, Rosemary Dawson, (booking out fast), and a visit from the Endeavour Harmony Chorus.
Literary Lunch
Adult Storytime has a new name: "Literary lunch". Bring your lunch down to the Southern lounge on Wednesday 6th June,1.00pm, as Melinda reads some short stories to entertain you.

To celebrate the National Year of Reading, ABC TV’s First Tuesday Book Club is looking for the 10 Aussie Books to Read before You Die – the great Australian reading list! Head to the website to browse the list and vote www.abc.net.au/arts/aussiebooks. The majority of these books are available to borrow from our Library Service. They are listed on the Library News.
Knitting Canberra's longest book mark
We have received six lovely knitted bookmarks from Engadine Library to send along and help Libraries ACT knit Canberra's longest book mark. Thanks to the Engadine Knitting Group for their efforts so far! Please remind the knitting groups of our particiaption in this and encourage them to knit even just one bookmark. If you can knit, (or would like to learn) and would like to participate in this World record attempt, Monique can email the template and instructions to you.
LITL Event: Sherlock Holmes BOOKED OUT
Sherlock Holmes talk with David Lewis, a member of "The Sydney Passengers" is being held at Cronulla Library, Thursday 24th May, 6.30pm. The attendees of the event will have a chance to show off their knowledge of this most enduring character in detective fiction, by answering five questions on Sherlock Holmes. The entries will be placed in a box and the first correct entry drawn out at the end of the talk will win a prize.
Twitter reading group
Do you like to twitter? Do you like to read? If you or if you know someone you know does, combine these interests and join the twitter reading group. They meet online, on twitter, the last Tuesday evening of each month, from 8pm, Australian Eastern Standard Time. Use the tag #NYR12 as you discuss your reading. For 2012, each month's discussion is based around the National Year of Reading monthly theme. So this month, join in the discussion of "your reading which is an escape".
The twitter book group has been running since 2011, (Ellen Forsyth won a LJ Mover and Shaker award in 2011 for dreaming up this innovative idea) and is going international next year. Each month on love2read2012 blog you can read the wrap up, "twitterchat- reading recommendations", for some great reading ideas that were tweeted around the chosen theme, as well as reading some interesting blog posts about the National Year of Reading.

eReaders and eBooks : An update.
The eBook and eReader market continues to grow, but publishers are yet to resolve the issues which dog the lending of eBooks by public libraries.Looking at dedicated eReaders, (As opposed to iPad's, tablets, etc.) for the last quarter of 2011, when added together Amazon's collection of Kindle eReader devices sold 10.8 million units. They outsold any other manufacturers eReaders by a factor of ten to one. In the same period Apple sold 15.4 million iPads.
Colour eReaders such as the Amazon Kindle Fire have sold well apparently because the colour screen is more versatile than the monochrome one. But a monochrome e-ink screen still provides a more book like reading experience. That may be about to change. The dedicated monochrome eReader could be on the way out as real advances are made in the area of colour screens for eReaders.

Story time for adults - 2nd May.
Sue Sturgess was our reader today and her experience in children's work and singing performances really showed. The NYR theme for May is Escape. Sue chose Michael Morpurgo's The Mozart question It was a great choice, and Sue read it with emotion, good timing, and easily switched voices for different characters. Sue shrugged when the character shrugged, flourished her arms - I was just waiting for her to include violin playing. The libraries new microphone worked a treat.
Only 6 listeners enjoyed this event which is very disappointing. If we weren't all in suspension waiting to see what will be required of us re Millenium I would like to call another meeting to discuss our options.
Should we try a few sessions at branches to test audience participation before deciding there is not enough demand for this type of event, no matter how much the staff enjoy it?

Find Legal Answers - new look website
Check out the State Library's new look Find Legal Answers website. The homepage layout and the topic headings have changed. The tabs along the top toolbar are much the same as before. The Find Legal Answers update training for staff will be held in the second half of this year.
Remember the HSC Legal Studies page is a great resource for your HSC Legal Studies students and there are still vacancies for the HSC lecture at Sutherland Library on June 13.
During Law Week we are hosting a talk - Planning ahead: Wills and Power of Attorney at Sutherland Library on May 15. Booking details on Google docs.
The State Library have produced new Find Legal Answers bookmarks. The reverse side list the titles in the Tool Kit. I have sent supplies to the branches - please give them away and contact me if you need any other promotional material.
