NoveList now links directly to our catalogue

There is now a custom link from NoveList to the Horizon catalogue making it quick to check if a title is held by Sutherland Shire Libraries.
Perform a search in NoveList and a new link will appear "Check the library catalogue" on each entry.
Click on this link and it will automatically search for the selected title in our catalogue.
This function works on staff Council PCs and for remote users but not on TAC PCs.

Great Reading Ideas from the RUSA Awards 2010

Links to some good reading lists can be found on a recent post on The Reference and User Services Association's blog. RUSA is part of the American Library Association and every year they announce a swag of awards.
Have a look at Notable Books List identifying the 25 most important fiction, non-fiction and poetry titles for adults.
I particularly like The Reading List recognizing outstanding genre fiction. It includes not only the winner of a genre, but a short list and read-alikes as well (Michael Robotham is in there!)
Despite its American focus, there are even a few ideas in the Outstanding Reference Sources list.
For access to past lists, visit the RUSA homepage, then click on the Awards link (the Reading List has been going since 2008, the Notable Books list since 1944).

Finding Fiction Series on the catalogue

You would have seen in the email Anne sent that catalogue records are being downloaded directly from Libraries Australia now, with no changes. This changes how we search for fiction series.

I just thought I'd put the main points here, and the location of Anne's full explanation, so that when you are looking you can search for 'series' and find what you need quickly.

Use "NoveList" from our online databases check series volumes Another excellent online tool is "Fantastic fiction".

Author browse.
Nora Robert’s trilogy with each volume listed as per old practice. New series entries will not appear in Author browse.

Title browse.
Both new and old series entries are retrieved. New format does not include volume.

Keyword
Use general keyword to retrieve both old and new format series.

Series browse.
The new format is retrieved when searching by author, but not by title.
