January, 2012The National Year of Reading has started, with the January theme being, as you know, Amazing Reads. The ref team's Amazing Mondays have started, with the palmistry readings with Rosemary Dawson proving very popular with both customers and staff. In addition to this,blog posts of ref team members top ten amazing reads are also being posted each Monday of January.
February theme is "Laugh"
The February theme is "laugh", hence the email from Sue asking for "Laugh of the day" ideas. There will be a laugh of the day posted every day of February as part of the display on the foyer wall at Sutherland.
As the official launch day for The National Year of Reading is 14th February-Library Lovers Day (of course), an open day is being held at Sutherland Library to show that libraries are indeed, more than just books! Further details of this event and how you can get involved can be found in the "Whats on?" section below.
Summer Reading ClubThe Summer Reading Club is going very well, with the Adult Summer Reading Club having approximately 500 entries in the past four weeks, the teens getting over 200, and we have 949 kids registered! Here's the breakdown of numbers:
Sutherland 271, Caringbah 201, Cronulla 145, Engadine 103, Menai 103, Miranda 81, Sylvania 45.
Thanks for all your support in making this promotion so successful so far. Remember, its not too late to get kids registered, and there is still plenty of time for the over 12's to read a book borrowed from the library for a chance to win some great prizes.
Our Story
The "Our story" promotion has finished, and the eight winning books(one from each state) will be announced on 14th February at the launch of The National Year of Reading. Sutherland Libraries received a total of 31 votes, with the following books being voted for: Harp in the South: 15, Sydney Harbour: 6, Lilians story: 1, Torn apart: 5, Idea of home: 2, Bereft: 3. Many people may have chosen to vote online, explaining the low numbers of voting slips collected.

7th February Happy Birthday Charles Dickens. 2012 is the 200th anniversary of his birth.
14th February Library Lovers Day, Valentine's Day and the official launch of The National Year of Reading 2012.
17th February Banjo Paterson 's birthday.
21st February International Mother language day. Promote language kits, bilingual dictionaries and Mango languages.Whats on
Sutherland Library Open Day
Find out more about the new and exciting resources your library has to offer at the Open Day on Tuesday, February 14th.
If you thought the library was just a place to borrow books, think again! You can download free music, ebooks, learn a language online, attend author talks, borrow graphic novels, CDs and DVDs, join a book group and so much more.
To coincide with the launch of the National Year of Reading 2012, the library is inviting everyone to stop in for a free sausage sizzle, face painting, a lucky door prize, behind the scenes library tours and a wealth of information on your library resources.

The Open Day is free, all are welcome to attend.
Banjo Paterson Talk – A ‘Literature in the Library’ (LITL) Event
Join us for the first of many LITL events being held in 2012 to celebrate the National Year of Reading. Banjo Paterson enthusiast Cliff Crane will be talking about this iconic Australian poet’s life and work in his informative and fascinating presentation ‘The Banjo is Not Dead’, paying tribute to this literary legend on his 148th birthday.

January 22nd to 29th is Healthy Weight Week. The library will be holding two Health Information Sessions during the week, run by author of weight loss guide Think Smart and Lose Weight Sandy Bröcking. Sandy’s real life experience with obesity and motivational techniques for staying healthy will feature in her talks.

Sutherland Library: Monday, 23 January 6.30-7.30pm.
Session Two:
Miranda Library: Wednesday, 25 January 10.30-11.30am.
These sessions are free.
Judy Nunn Author Talk
Judy’s newest book Tiger Men is a story of avarice, greed and power, focusing on three families who struggle to achieve their dreams in the turbulent times that led to Federation and the First World War. Tiger Men will be available for sale and signing on the night.
This is a free event.
Engadine local Burt Sigsworth will be talking about the unbelievable true story of a group of friends who selected themselves as Australia's first-ever international dodgeball team, The Emus. This unlikely team took on the best dodgeball players in the world and Burt’s new book Fly Like an Emu is a funny account of their journey.
This is a free event at Engadine library on January 19th, 6.30pm. Copies of Fly Like an Emu will be available for sale and signing on the night. The library has two copies available for loan,if you would like to read this amusing account of how the Australian National Dodgeball team came into being.
