'National Year of Reading, 2012 "Our Story"

National Year of Reading – ‘Our Story’
The first campaign for The National Year of Reading, "Our Story" opens for voting tomorrow. Please look out for the information pack that has been sent out in the delivery. Included in the pack are book summaries, book reviews and author information, as well as laminated book covers of the six shortlisted titles and an A3 poster to help you create a display to promote "Our Story". A box to collect votes will be sent out tomorrow, 01/11/2011. Don't forget to have your say, and vote for which book you think best represents New South Wales.
What is ‘Our Story’?
2012 is the National Year of Reading and to kick start the celebrations, everyone is invited to get reading and vote for the book that best represents New South Wales and who we are.
Every state and territory around the country is invited to vote on a shortlist of six books each, chosen by an independent panel of readers, which will form a collection that when read together, describes the Australian experience.
This is an exciting opportunity to help choose one of the final eight books that are the 2012 National Year of Reading collection.
How do people vote?
· Voting opens on Tuesday 1 November 2011 online at: www.abc.net.au/yearofreading, at participating book shops and all Libraries ACT branches. Voting closes at 5 pm on Friday 6 January 2012.
· Please encourage people to vote online in the first instance – you may like to encourage people to use the library computers to do this and don’t forget to cast a vote yourself.
· Voting slips can be collected via the voting box set up next to your display.
· Completed forms should be returned to Monique at Sutherland Libraries via internal mail after 6 January, 2012.
What is the NSW shortlist?
· Bereft, by Chris Womersley
· The idea of home, by John Hughes
· Lilians story, by Kate Grenville
· Harp in the south, by Ruth Park
· Torn apart, by Peter Corris
· Sydney Harbour: A history, by Ian Hoskins
· The complete state and territory shortlists are available on the National Year of Reading website: http://www.love2read.org.au/
· All residents of New South Wales are being encouraged to vote for the book that ‘speaks’ about life in New South Wales. People are encouraged to think about what makes living in New South Wales so unique.
Announcements
· The list of eight winning titles will be announced at the official launch of the National Year of Reading on Tuesday 14 February 2012 at the National Library of Australia.
· Book groups and individual readers will then be able to go online and register as a member of ‘Our Story’ and join in the discussions about the eight chosen stories.
