Australian Copyright Council - Working with Copyright
Libraries have special provisions and requirements under the
Copyright Act and so to assist those
of us working in libraries (and not versed in legal jargon) the Australian
Copyright Council has produced several information sheets specifically to do with the application of copyright in libraries
- not only to help us library employees steer clear of infringements, but to better help our
patrons.
Also discussed were occasions when libraries can look to Section 200AB of the Copyright Act to
deal with ‘special cases’ not served by other sections of the Act.
These might include, for example, updating of VHS recordings to a more
accessible format, or perhaps making copies for patrons with a disability. If
in doubt, consult the Australian Copyright Council website.
But for a quick clearance checklist, consider:
- Is the item/document covered by actually copyright? Has copyright expired?
- Are you using a substantial part?
- Are you making it public?
- Do you have permission from the copyright owner?
- Does an exception apply?
- Are you infringing on moral rights?
And just to finish off with a little more trivia, the two items pictured are NOT covered by copyright? Why? Because for copyright to
apply it needs to be produced by a human, therefore computer generated items
like the Yellow Pages and monkey selfies are free from copyright – copy away!
Air conditioning Central Library building
Time to face facts. The air con at Sutherland is rotten. It is either the tropics or refrigerator.
Instead of whining until it gets changed again could we have a vote? Majority rules. Then stick with it until the air conditioning can be replaced.
Endlessly alternating is upsetting my hard won yoga zen.
My wardrobe can only feature either summer or winter clothes.
I prefer the refrigerator because I can add layers.
There is only so much a fat 62 year old can take off if we go for tropics without upsetting aesthetic standards. However I will accept majority rule.
Does anyone volunteer to keep a tally of peoples preferences? How about Brian "Numbers" Jones?

Promoting Encyclopedia Britannica on the Library Website
A couple of months ago I was asked about moving the Encyclopedia Britannica (and Britannica Image Quest) pages on the library website from their current location under Digital Collections to the Kids and Parents section. The thinking was that staff in the Children's section were often recommending Britannica as a resource for school homework and assignments and in this context it might get more use if people could find it under Kids and Parents.
My initial thoughts were that Britannica's location in the site would not impact use greatly, providing it was in a reasonably logical location. But you can never be sure and I thought it would be a good opportunity to test my assumptions.

Services for homeless people
Link2home is a statewide telephone information and referral service to
assist the homeless and those at risk of homelessness. The service
provides information about local homelessness services, assess what
people need and refer them to appropriate specialist services. Available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Ph: 1800 152 152.
Find their contact details by searching "link2home" on the Community Directory.
There are some Link2home business cards at the Information Desk. I will order more and send to branches.
Council also has a Homelessness Policy that mentions a referral card for services. I am following up if current referral cards are still available.
