Canberra's longest bookmark
Would you like to be part of creating Canberra's longest bookmark? Can you knit? If you answered yes to both these questions, ACT Library Service would like to invite you and anyone else you may know (such as our lovely knitting group people) to make some knitted book marks, which will be sewn together to create Canberra's longest book mark. Certainly apt for the National Year of Reading! If you are interested, the very simple pattern is available to create a knitted book mark and this can be sent to you by Monique. You can also send the completed bookmarks to Monique. The promotion runs until the end of the year, so there's still time to get knitting! Details of this promotion have been sent to branches with Knitting groups - Miranda, Engadine and Cronulla.
Our Story book review Competition.
The National Year of Reading team is running a competition for the best book review of any of the eight "Our Story" National Year of Reading winning books collection. There are some great book packs and an e-reader to be won. Copies of the poster to promote this competition on behalf of NYR will be in the next delivery (27/04/2012).
May-Escape Theme
The May theme for the National Year of reading is Escape. Cronulla will be holding a "Favourite travel destination" competition, running throughout May to celebrate this theme.
A large display of travel guide kits and travel guides, including the Lonely Planet guides will be created. Posters, flyers and entry forms will also be used to promote the competition.
Tara has created a fabulous display involving an ocean of books and a desert island to promote the Escape theme- you can check this out on the Sutherland Library foyer from the beginning of May.
LITL Events
"The Charles Dickens - Life and works talk with Susannah Fullerton" went really well, with 55 people of 63 bookings attending a fascinating talk about Dickens, in this, the bicentenary year of his birth. If you are asked by customers for an audiobook version of something by Dickens, this may be courtesy of Susannah Fullerton! Thanks to all staff for promoting, booking and generally helping to make this event a success. The next LITL event is featuring Sherlock Holmes presented by David Lewis, a member of the "Sydney Passengers". We have 20 bookings so far!

Have you been reading something you want to tell the world (or at least the shire) about? Here's your chance. Due to the sad demise of 'Checkmeout' this year we will be posting book reviews on the Library blog. A blogeverydayofJune daily book reviews has been set up so you can select the days you would like to post a review about something you have read. You can send the review to Monique or Martin for posting, save your post as a draft, even schedule it for your chosen day in blogger. It doesn't have to be fiction. It doesn't have to be a book you are reading- Reading is more than books. It's newspapers, blogs, maps, travel guides, magazine articles, reading to children, foreign film subtitles, audiobooks and more. Your favourite book may be the last one you read, or one that harks back to your childhood, maybe you have more than one favourite.
Seniors Week adult story time
Melinda made some great choices for this event but disappointingly listeners were thin on the ground. Do you think people don't want to be labelled "Seniors"?
It is colds and flu season and as understudy I thought I was going to have to step up to the mark but Melinda soldiered on, and her performance was entertaining and excellent.
A true life story about Wayne Bennett, rugby league coach extraordinaire, and his difficult private life was inspiring.
A funny poem by Jeffrey Deaver about books and reading provided a change in direction.
The finale was a murder story - Lamb to the slaughter by Roald Dahl.
Melinda read it with great timing and suspense.
The audience were most appreciative - and those who didn't attend just missed out.
We will start advertising the next lunch time read aloud (Wed 4/4/2012, 1pm-1.45pm Southern Lounge) from next Wednesday.
Jacinta is the reader, with Sam as understudy.
Please take any opportunity to promote this National Year of Reading event.

March, 2012What's happening
As you all know, Jess is getting married! on the 14th April, 2012 Jess Small will officially become Jess Brain (no hyphenating comments please).
Jess will be honeymooning in Scandanavia for a whole month, then its back to work on May 16th. Congratulations Jess!
April Theme-Feel
The theme for April is Feel. Engadine Library is hosting events in April around this theme. Each Monday of April, customers are being invited to book into 15 minute time slots to try different activities related to the theme of "Feel", with experts from each of the following fields: Palm reading, head and neck massage, kinseology and guided meditation.
Please note, there are no advance bookings, customers must come to Engadine Library on the day to book in.
National year of Reading event
Entries are now open for the Read This! 2012 Creative Reading Prize. This project is a celebration of books for young adults and an opportunity for those aged between 12 and 18 years to share their love of books and reading with their peers in a creative way. Entries close 31st May, 2012. You will receive posters at the branches to help promote this event.
LITL events
Cronulla Library hosted the second Literature in the Library (LITL) event, "Robin Hood in Literature" presented by David Overett. There was a good turn out, with 21 people attending.
The next LITL event will be at Sutherland Library, 24th April at 10.30am. It will feature literary icon Charles Dickens, and is being presented by Susannah Fullerton. The booking sheet for this event will be up on the library website very soon.

What's Happening
NYR Display Materials
To coincide with the official launch of the National Year of Reading, each library branch will be receiving two packs of materials to use around their libraries to promote the National Year of Reading. These are a general pack of NYR materials including bookmarks, posters and stickers, and a "Our Story" pack. These can be used to create displays and generally promote the National Year of Reading at the library.
Our Story winners
The Our Story winners were announced on 14th February, Library Lovers Day. The NSW winner was "The idea of home" by John Hughes. You can find all the winners here.

Cliff Crane will be presenting a talk ''The Banjo is not dead" and will be accompanied by banjo player Ron James playing "Along the road to Gundaghai". This event is booked out. The March LITL event is at Cronulla, with a talk about Robin Hood by Dave Overett.

Author Talk - Mark Dapin
This talk is booking out quickly. Author of Spirit House, Strange Country and King of the Cross, Mark Dapin has been editor in chief of ACP's men's magazines, and a hugely popular columnist for Fairfax's Good Weekend. Mark will be speaking at Sutherland Library about his books and writing during Senior’s Week. Copies of Mark’s books will be available for sale and signing on the night .

Seniors Adult Storytime (NO BOOKINGS NECESSARY)
