Harmony Day 2014 at Caringbah Library
Caringbah Patrons joined us in celebrating Harmony Day by
honouring diversity and adding a ‘hand’ to our ‘hands of Friendship’ mural. We
asked patrons to write down either their country of birth or the favourite
country they have visited or would like to visit. Anyone could come up and make a
contribution to the mural . It was a simple, effective and inviting way to
connect with the community.

Harmony Day thanks
Today is officially Harmony Day, but we had a special celebration last Wednesday thanks to Kris Ovidi who read Minutka the bi-lingual dog. I'm sure all branches are equally appreciative of the staff who shared their skills with us mono-linguists!
We mentioned Harmony Day again today at Menai, and one of our regulars, who happened to be here last Wednesday, asked "But where's the doggie?"!!
So, gracias, Kris for making our day very special and bringing a taste of Espana to Menai.

Academy Awards Library
Did you know there is a library for the Academy Awards??
The Margaret Herrick Library established in 1928, is a non-circulating reference and research collection devoted to the history and development of the motion picture as an art form and an industry.
There are strict rules in place for library users including a long list of what NOT to bring into the library:
cameras, cell phones, scanners, purses, backpacks, pens, food, chewing gum, beverages, coats, umbrellas, envelopes, magazines......makes our "bags in the lockers" policy for the Reference Library seem very tame!
Have a look at the Resources and Databases.... you can search the Academy Awards Acceptance Speech database for a transcript of speeches and often a youtube video is also available. Try some of the more controversial speeches ie Vanessa Redgrave, Michael Moore -"Bowling for Colimbine", Marlon Brando -"The Godfather" OR funny ie. Roberto Benigni, particularly award as director of "Life is beautiful", Adrien Brody-"The Pianist", Jack Palance-"City Slickers", and Cuba Gooding Jr-"Jerry Maguire".
The Digital collections provide a searchable database of over 5000 items dating back to the founding of the organisation in 1927. This includes sheet music, mostly older material but could prove useful for patrons wanting a particular score.
The Production Art database can be searched by keyword, film, designer and persons depicted and can be limited to records with images. This would be a valuable resource for those requests for costume design or looking for a fancy dress outfit to copy. The few sketches from "Aliens" are very cool!
There is a lot more to discover in this collection....spend some time exploring, I'm sure you'll lose yourself in Hollywood for a time.
