Ages ago you read Di’s impressive run down of resource sharing possibilities, finally here is more inspiation from this conference. Here’s one library’s approach to engaging with their community.

Displays in the front windows
- Innovative mascots ‘mannequins’
- they participate in (and promote, by their dress and props) current and upcoming activites.

- “Midnight Mannequin Madness”
Facebook
– 65% of baby boomers use a range of social network’s
- used work experience kids to create their initial page
- Must be now/current, a static page will present the wrong image.
Newsletter
– graphic designer set it up initially
- Print 1000 per issue
- It is emailed as well, requests to join the email list are constantly increasing

Partnerships

– Adult promotions
- this allowed for more strategically linked events
- developed a marketing plan to create an overall vision
- Survey non-users, as well as users
- realisation that the further away people are the less they use, therefore they made a library ‘kiosk’ in the art gallery
Bookshops
- Provide discounts on popular books and access to large name authors for events
Local cinemas
– movie literature promotions
- great community building events with champange and nibbles
COTA – council of the ageing
- provide support and will promote activities in their newsletter
SA Theatre company
– discounted tickets to library members
- actors come and talk about productions
- playwrights and producers about writing and developing the play

Print disabled book club
– for those who listen
October SA COTA Intergenerational Connection
– young people targetting older people
- 4 young volunteers per 12 older people and they work through whtever the older person wants help with
Reading Connectedness
– One book One Burnside
- 2 months to read the book
- Library buys 50 copies
- Books the author to talk at the end of the period
Involve the community
– 150 volunteers throughout the service.
