Google+
All you social media fiends out there may be interested in this article which outlines library uptake of Google+ with links to how to do it, from the gurus David Lee King and Joe Murphy.I understand that we need to be in the places where people interact, but I'm wondering if eventually, it will get to organisations just having a central core of information which then can be used to populate the many and various social media sites which we need to be a part of.

You can do this sort of thing to some extent already. For example, we update Twitter automatically when a new library news blog is posted.
There is some difficulty because the various social media spaces have different protocols and technical requirements around posting updates from outside the site.
Also, if you only ever auto post you may be missing the value of social media. As an organisation, the value of social media is in the conversations you can have directly with your users/customers. This tells you a lot about where you are going right and wrong with your products and services.
Social media is not purely a marketing tool. Managing different spaces with a central core of information can appear too much like you are treating the spaces as marketing opportunities.
That doesn't necessarily mean you should use social media like that. But it's something the organisation must consider - what do you want from facebook and Twitter (and whatever is coming next)? Where is the value for the organisation?
