Libraries Australia Search - New Features
I listened in on a webinar this week which highlighted the new and rearranged features of Libraries Australia Search.
I know we have all been going ahead and using it, figuring it out as we go along...that's what we are good at!
But sometimes having the obvious pointed out to you, saves a lot of time and frustration, wondering why it's not working as it did.

So here are the differences for good or bad.....
Home Screen and every screen
Be aware of Statefulness - remembered settings from your previous usage.
- see manual pg. 19 and 20 for a full explanation
- if results are not what you expect look for limits or databases which may be still on, from the last use.
- some are remembered for the current session only, others are more permanent for the same PC and logon

It is possible to personalise the generic shared login - should you want a personal account to set up your own preferences, it can be done by contacing the Help Desk. The login will be the same...Section 18 in the manual will explain how to set up your own account once you have it.

Although I can't see anyone, other than our cataloguers, using these last two tabs much, it is worth knowing they are there and why.

- two tiers of tabs at the top so you can navigate easier
- at the bottom of every page are Quick Links to help, the manual etc. they were on the side in panels.
- throughout you my see small circles with ? in them...these are contextual help, click for enlightenment!
SEARCH - first tab
Simple the default screen after login
- Limits have changed slightly
- In Library is now Held in Australia
- Books subdivided down to eBooks
- New Non-musical sound with a subcategory of Interviews which was Oral histories
- Film/video has a subcategory DVD
- new column headed Accessible makes it quite obvious what is available to search for in this area. - Databases have been made more obvious. Popular four on the main screen. Use more database link for the others. The Open Source databases have been removed from this search option, although results from them are still available via Trove.
- limits grey out if they are not supported by the database
- can search across bibliographic and authority records simultaneously, though this was not demonstrated. Try the manual if it interests you as an option.

Advanced Search
- there are now four search lines instead of three
- there is an author line
- title search, starts with, now ignores non-filing terms so it does not matter if you use them or not
- the number line has been split. The default number is ISBN/ISSN/ISMN only. Use the dropdown to locate ANBD No/OCLC No.
- Library symbol has been changed to Library NUC symbol for clarity
- new search terms content, media and carrier type to correspond with the new RDA cataloguing standard
Command Search
- now uses SOLR query language instead of SQL?
- very powerful, allows searching for journal vols, illustrations etc. See the manual for details.
- these features are the same except there is no ability to have Saved searches as an alert
- but it was mentioned to 'watch this space' about alerts
RESULTS - second tab
Search Results
- Search terms are now highlighted wherever they appear in the result, not just in the field you may have searched in
- can view up to 200 records per page
- record details are all on one page Title, Author, RDA indications, brief publishing details, no.of holdings - includes my library, which is in bold
- the list can be sorted by number of holdings
- Hovering brings up a preview of the full record, when it's over the title, or the holdings when over the no. of holdings
- hovering can be hidden if one doesn't like it
- jump to has been moved to the bottom of the page
- scroll down the result list page the menu headings stay with you in black
Full view
- provides the same functionality as before
- Librarians view has been renamed Marc view
- indicators with dotted lines provide an explanation of the tag and/or field when ones hovers - check copyright still available
- Cite this is a new feature with various citation style options
- will download to Endnote etc... - Get This Item has changed function and is now only for use with LADD
- deep link to catalogues using the library name link
- links to ILRS and ALG are now to the right of the holdings information
- favourite libraries have a black heart (already set up by Di)
Compare Records
- choose up to four records and use compare records
- it will show them side by side
- differences will be highlighted in blue
- inform NLA of duplicates and indicate your preferred record with comments
- record create date is translated from the original cataloguing date NOT when it was added to Libraries Australia (from the Marc- w8 field looking at the first 8 characters - I think!)
Saved Records
- can be sorted now by date saved, no. of holdings etc...
- can deselect from the list here
BROWSE - third tab
Select Browse and Term Lists
- choose a search term and browse in either Author, Title or Subject authorities
OR - select terms directly from the particular authority list by choosing the authority and clicking browse without entering a term
ADD RECORD - fourth tab
- there are no real differences here in the options
- + button on the right to add extra lines
- URL line can be ticked to index it in Trove as well
- updated for RDA options
