Copyright is Fun
Fun...damental to libraries that is. Steph B, Steph D and I learned this and so much more at the ACC Copyright Fundamentals for Libraries Conference. Here are the answers to your burning questions about copyright in our workplace.
Q. What is protected by copyright?
A. Literary works e.g, novels, journal articles, computer programs, musical works. See this information sheet for the full list.
Q. What isn't protected?
A. Ideas, concepts, styles, information, names, slogans, titles, people and photographs taken by monkeys.
Q. How long does copyright last?
A. For the life of the creator plus 70 years.
Q. Is plagiarism the same as copyright?
A. No. Plagiarism can be committed without infringing on the creator's copyright. To use someone's idea, such as an idea for a movie plot, would be plagiarism. To use a substantial portion of someone's work, such as copying the script, would be infringing copyright.
Q. Is there a reason copyright signs are placed near photocopiers?
A. Yes, this reduces the library's liability if a patron infringes copyright.
Q. Do patrons read the signs?
A. Live in hope.
Q. Can I run a live music event in the library?
A. Yes. However as the library is a public place, an APRA AMCOS license is required if the musician/s will be performing someone else's work. They can tootle away freely if performing original work.
Q. How about streaming music or video?
A. Also requires an APRA AMCOS license.
Q. Can I copy multiple articles from a journal for a patron?
A. Yes if they relate to the same topic/area of study.

Thanks Kat that was Fun!
I was listening when you were talking about the Monkey taking the photo. I thought the Monkey had the copyright, because it took the photo, as opposed to the photographer whose camera the Monkey stole.
But it appears the Monkey doesn't have copyright as it's an animal, nor does the photographer.
Sooo ...this means anyone can use the photo however or wherever one likes with impunity??
No one will be fessing up to animals stealing their cameras anymore!
