Homelessness in the Sutherland Shire

I attended the homelessness seminar hosted by Council where the results of the recent Homeless Persons Registry Week were presented.

9 teams visited various locations in the Shire over 3 consecutive days where people were known to be sleeping rough (bush, park, tent, car). 13 homeless people volunteered to undertake a survey. Another 17 people identified themselves as homeless but did not want to be surveyed. All of those surveyed were males over 40 years old. The average had been homeless for over 2 years.

Those 13 people were then linked to the "Sutherland Street to Home" project. This project is currently placing 6 of those homeless into housing and working to provide support for the remaining people.

These projects were run by South Eastern Sydney Partners in Recovery (SESPIR)

I have put their flyers on the noticeboard at Sutherland and left flyers at the Info Desk in the FAQs folder.
I have asked Community Services at Council to add their details to the "Homelessness Support" page on Council's website.

The FAQs folder also contains referral cards to the "link2home", a 24 hour telephone service for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

During business hours you can also ring Council's Community Services x5563 for assistance.
