Ref Rap: New Reference Book

Although only Sutherland holds a copy of this book I thought that it was worth mentioning to everyone as it is a really useful resource for anyone who is interested in the Victoria Cross Medal and British Military History in general. The book begins by providing a short history of the VC, the terms of the 1856 VC Warrant and its amendments, and a complete chronological list of all VC holders. Following this the Campaigns of the VC are listed along with a more detailed list of the VC holders from each campaign. This section of the book is not only very interesting and informative but it also enables the reader to really grasp the reality of these people, as it provides us with details such as their age, what they did to receive their VC and when they died. Sometimes more personal details are provided such as other life achievements, famous relatives, and details of how they died. In the middle of the book photos of some of the VC’s are provided, including a photo of Charles Lucas who was the very first person to be awarded a VC. Burial locations and an alphabetical list of the VC holders are also provided and can be found towards the back of the book. Finally a really useful feature of this book is the glossary, which comes in particularly handy if like me you are unfamiliar with words such as dacoits or assegai, and for the many acronyms and abbreviations used throughout the book. Definitely one to keep in mind in the lead up to ANZAC day.
