Freegal Promotion

The month of October will be our first month of actively marketing our resources to our customers.
Freegal has been chosen for the first one, as we have a short lead time and it is the easiest to use and costs alot, so we want to make sure it is cost effective.

For the customer campaign we may try to tie it in with, Mental Health Week...music eases the soul??!!, or at Meagan's suggestion Rocktober! Or both angles at separate times.

All staff who work on desks need to look at and play with the following information. It will be expected that you have a working knowledge of Freegal, for this promotion.
If you would like an Outreach team member to work with your team on it, then ring to book a time convenient to you! But hurry it must be done by October.

What is Freegal?
Freegal allows users to download 3 (three) songs per week, or 1 video clip and 1 song. The music is updated every day, there are thousands of artists, tens of thousands of albums, and 7 million songs. The Freegal Music website has hundreds of genres of music and is rich in many of them. The content is based upon agreements with over 10,000 music labels, including the labels of Sony Music Entertainment. There now 12,000 video clips.

Why use Freegal?
Use Freegal because it is the only legal way of downloading songs to your computer or device for free.  Artists are not being deprived of their livelihoods by illegal downloads.

How do I learn to use Freegal?
The best way is to give it a go yourself. Once you click on the Download Free Songs link on the Freegal page have a look at the FAQ menu option (top right).
Divided into General and Technical they tell you everything you need to know about what is available in Freegal how to find stuff, user rights and how to transfer music downloaded to a device to your computer and/or iTunes.

When can I get my next 3, free songs?
The week starts at midnight Sunday in Virginia USA, which means 2pm Monday afternoon here. Because of time fluctuations due to daylight savings and the like, I tell people 3pm. This means they can download 3 songs Monday morning and 3 more Monday night, if they had not already downloaded any during that first week. (In the App - check top right of screen and it will say how many are allocated & many have been used)
One can view the playlists without logging in or check if a particular song is available

Why won’t the video clip download to my device?
At the moment they only download to a computer. The App will be upgraded for video and is due for that by 15th September.

Once you find the answers to the following and you will be well placed to promote Freegal to our customers in October.
What software do I need to download to use Freegal?
Why are there two arrows per song in the App?
I’m using the App on my phone, where is the song I just downloaded?
I want to find some Ska music but don’t know the artist names?
Can I listen to the song first to see if I like it?
What kind of file are the songs? Videos?
How long can I have the songs, videos?

Some libraries have made youtube videos showing how to use freegal. Here's one; here's another.

the site has changed look recently so this is a bit out of date but the process of logging in, searching and downloading songs is the same.

Staff comment : I just want to check something about Freegal... Am I right to say that it does not work on the iphone because you need Flash Player? (I have downloaded songs on my mac but never on my phone). I know there are apps that can be downloaded to allow this but should I try these apps first or is there other ways? I don't want to start buying apps if not needed.
Reply: I don't have an iPhone, but I just checked it on the library iPad, it's installed and has songs loaded. I checked the Apple store and the Freegal App Music is free.

This is what the freegal facts state
Freegal Mobile Apps are available!
The Freegal Music Service has recently launched free mobile apps, and they are currently available in the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace, a.k.a. Google Play.

This may have changed since you last tried it, so give it another go.
