Re: Freegal on iPad problem "Requested song is not allowed to download"

Below is the response I got from the freegal Help Desk, to the original question (at bottom) from Menai.
The answer to both parts of the question is essentially distribution rights.

I will take this piece by piece to explain the situation.

First, whenever accessing via a mobile device, an iPad in this case, please make sure to access through the Freegal music mobile application. The site is not fully compatible for mobile devices which is why we developed the app.

Second, some of the music we have rights to, we are permitted to distribute to certain territories but not others. At this time, we have rights to distribute Kidz Bop Kids in the United States but not in Australia. The http://www.freegalmusic.com/ page displays music we have rights to distribute in the states. http://sutherlandshire.freegalmusic.com/ shows the music we have rights to distribute in Australia.

Your subscription is not restricted in the sense that everything that we have legal rights to distribute, is available to you. However, we do not currently have rights to distribute in your territory.

Cheers Jacinta

Hi Jacinta & Martin,

This is a problem Tynelle encountered on her iPad. I tested it on my iPad with the same result. The FAQ section does not address it.
See attached jpg from iPad.

1. Open Freegal app on iPad
2. Tap Browse.
3. Tap Top Genres
4. Tap Children's
5. This displays the top 10 songs within the Children's genre. However, when you try to download any song (e.g. Thrift Shop, at the top of the list) by the artist "Kidz Bop Kids", the message "Requested song is not allowed to download" is displayed.

We did a bit of investigating and found that if you search for "Kidz Bop Kids" via the Sutherland Library Freegal portal  -
http://sutherlandshire.freegalmusic.com/
 - their are no results.

However if you search via the commercial Freegal page -
http://www.freegalmusic.com/
 - 3 albums by "Kidz Bop Kids" are found.

So does this mean there is some non-Library content showing up on the Freegal app that should not be?
I'm sure some of our customers will ask about this soon, considering it is the top genre recommendations that are not working. Plus Tynelle says they are cool songs that kids would love!

Thanks,
Brian
