Doesn’t time fly? The second edition of our as yet unnamed newsletter is ready to read!
Home Library is guest posting this month with a reminder:
PLACING HOLD ON HOME LIBRARY ITEMS.
If the item is showing available- place ITEM LEVEL HOLD- then notify Home Library to remove from the shelf.
(either phone or email.)- we check it in and send to appropriate branch.
If the item is out on loan- place ITEM LEVEL HOLD. When the item is checked in on return- the hold will tag.
Always place ITEM LEVEL HOLD- but you must notify Home Library if the item is AVAILABLE to remove from the shelf.
Events Planning
It’s only September but it’s already time to start thinking about events we should hold next year. I am currently updating the event planning checklist and I will be including tips and library-wide policies. eg. how to negotiate with presenters, an event charging policy, a refreshment policy and clarify our relationship with businesses that are connected to events.. Please let me know if you think of any issues you would like me to cover.
While coming up with ideas for events next year please keep in mind our target groups Older Adults (55 +), Young Males (12-24), Men (27 -45). We know those last two groups are the hardest to get into the library. So if you have a great idea about an event to attract them please discuss it first with your branch librarian and then let me know. At the same time we still need to provide events and services for the entire Sutherland Shire Community. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Reading Matters
The readwatchplay theme for October is Egoreads- Biographies and memoirs strike at our humanity. Understanding the motivations of another person’s life, empathising with their situation no matter how different it is from your own can create some powerful emotions that stay with you for many years.
Please send lists of non fiction titles to add to the Health check. You can see the titles already added on the wiki.
We have a last minute author talk/book signing event with Paul Ham. He has released a new book, 1914, The year the world ended, and will be visiting Sutherland Library on Tuesday, 15th October at 6.30pm. Please promote this event, as this didn’t make it into Our Shire! Posters and flyers will be sent out in the next day or so.
Literary Snippets
- The Guardian has started a definitive list of the hundred best novels. Its a hundred week project-(You could read along weekly) it is starting with John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress!
- Doctor Sleep, the sequel to Stephen King’s classic horror story, The Shining is out now...nearly forty years later. It is on order for Sutherland Library, request it now before the waiting list gets too long.
- The most abandoned books list. Offering amusing insights into when, what and why books get abandoned…
- As we have just finished celebrating the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice with a Jane Austen trivia night, this seemed quite apt. What your favourite literary heroine says about you.
- Banned Books Week is on 22nd-28th September, 2013. Check out this list of America’s most surprising banned books.
