eBook Holiday Reading
Hello Everyone,
Please spend some time trying this one out yourself, ask questions of the Outreach staff – if we do not know the answers we will endeavour to locate one. Please organise with me a time for one of us to come out and work with you on this.

CSIRO
Why would I
use this resource?
- When using Wikipedia is not giving you the depth of information you want.
- When you are in the bush and want to identify that frog/tree/wallaby
- When you want to immediately read, quality, Australian focussed information.
- Because they are beautiful publications!
- There is a selection of titles (currently 95) published by CSIRO, some from the Archives, but most from the Current List with new titles being offered as they become available.
- All titles are catalogued, so a search in Encore using the keyword CSIRO, then using the Online facet, will retrieve them. Click on the ‘Click here to view book’ link and you will be asked to choose between viewing it online now and downloading it to keep.
- One can also access the whole collection via the Encyclopedia and Reference Books link under online resources, and browse or search for a particular topic in just this collection.
Features
- Once downloaded the book is yours to keep…forever….or for as long as your device lasts.
- There is no need to download specific software to read these titles.
- There are great features like, reading aloud, citing, note taking, etc. which require one to register with eb20 Reader. It is a very short form requiring only username, email and password.
- Contents page displays on the right, with hyperlinks to the relevant section.
- Also on the right is access to previous Bookmarks, Notes etc. Settings, informs you of how much of your printing and/or copying allocation you have used.
TIP: When
copying one needs to highlight click copy and then highlight and copy again
from the Copy Usage Meter box.
Practise
- Find CSIRO ebooks in Encore.
- Read one in your browser
- Copy some text. Diagrams graphs and pictures do not appear able to be copied.
P.S. I am
currently making sure of this, as well as investigating the emailing which does
not deliver the required text!
GVRL
Why would I use
this resource?
- Non-fiction and /or reference titles on a variety of subjects which can be used directly from the catalogue. No need to borrow or come in to the library!
- Use them if the customer needs the information today or can’t wait for a book to come in from a branch.
- We hold the latest ‘Rough guides’ for …everywhere! So offer them, when the Lonely Planet they asked for is out.
What do I need
to know about this resource?
- There are 411 titles in this ‘Reference’ collection. All are individually catalogued and will appear in Encore if you use the search term ‘Gale Virtual’
- One can also access the whole collection via the Encyclopedia and Reference Books link under online resources, and browse or search for a particular topic in just this collection.
- Subjects currently represented are Arts, Biography, Business, Education, Environment, General Reference, History, Information and Publishing, Law, Library Science, Literature, Medicine, Multicultural Studies, Nation and World, Religion, Science, Social Science, Technology and Travel
- The help tab provides access to a 'Work with GVRL' (video) and a link to information on Browse & Search, Listen to Your Articles, Bookmark Your Favorites, Perform Complex Searches, Download PDF to Your Reader and View in Multiple Languages.
- The framing of the database can be translated into 34 different languages using the last tab on the right, the English version of which has flags on it.
- There is a translate article dropdown box where one can choose from 12 languages the articles can be read in.
- Like all the databases there are many useful tools, including viewing in text or PDF, downloading sections, listening to the articles, dictionary and search the text.
Practise
- Find Gale Virtual Reference Library on the library website.
- Locate a title list of what is owned by Sutherland Shire Libraries
- Search the whole collection to locate which titles would have ‘drum singing’ mentioned.
- Email yourself an article.
Oneclick
Why would I use
this?
- Use this when only audiobooks are wanted. No need, to sort through titles in the wrong format.
- Easy to use once it is setup and installed. It’s not called OneClick for nothing!
- All One Click Digital titles have unlimited availability - no waiting lists, no reserves.
What do I need
to know about this resource?
- The Oneclick webpage has links to a video tour, the downloadable Getting Started Guide and FAQ’s, support and devices guide. Oneclick brief instructions are available from the Help Tab
- To create an account you need to do so via the Library’s website through the browser, then one can use the app for browsing, downloading etc.
- To get the newest titles Advanced search provides a date released search option. Be aware that this is the date released in audio. I found Burmese Days by George Orwell in the released in the last 6 month search. Originally published 1934! Though there were also genuine new releases Tom Bale’s The Catch published March 2013.
- There does not appear to be a limit on titles you can have donwloaded.
Features
- Over 90% of included titles are unprotected mp3 files. (This means they can be downloaded manually without the OneClickdigital Media Manager.) Files that are WMA require downloading via the Media Manager.

Overdrive
Why
would I use this?
- Use Overdrive for downloading eBooks and Audiobooks to your PC or mobile device to read/listen anytime you don’t want to carry a book!
What do I need
to know about this resource?
- Initial setup can be a little frustrating
- Tell new customers that they must watch the instructional video on the Overdrive webpage and look at the other information under Before You Start
- There is a lot of information, training and help on the site
- These two presentations are very enlightening! Recordings of the sessions themselves are in the Learning Centre, as on demand courses, (see links above) for those who prefer to listen and be shown. These should now be watchable on your iPad or other mobile device.
- There are also PDF's of these presentations if you prefer that format.
Tips I picked up….
A
few basic things tips to think about for immediate needs are;
- First questions to ask the customer
- What device do you have?
- What do you want to do with it?
Once
you have the answer to these you are halfway there!
- Follow-up questions
- Have you used the device before
- Have you used Overdrive before?
- Many titles now have the option to use Overdrive Read to read them directly in the browser.
- NO downloading of any software required. Great for the first time, or one off user
- Apparently the Kindle Fire/HD only, will work outside the US for Overdrive Read.I can't test this I don't have one - do any of you?
- What can be returned early?
- MP3’s only (on PC’s not Mac’s)
- WMA’s can NOT be returned early.
- Which file should I be downloading?
- Adobe digital editions will only work on a PC or laptop.
- When do I need an Adobe ID?
- For both an Adobe Digital edition and Overdrive Media Console app.
The following notes are from the second
session and therefore about more advanced assistance.
- Staff are able to login to https://marketplace.overdrive.com/Account/Login and work with a customers account. Login details accessible from the usual places (DMS and Compass)
- Click on the Support Tab to see what you can do here.
- To download the title from their bookshelf again, or transfer to another device one needs the Adobe ID they used to first download the item.
- What operating system? Windows 8 or Windows RT – search Overdrive Help for instructions
- One will always get a Windows media Player Securiy Update reminder the first time they use it on their laptop.
- ACSM and ODM files are files used for downloading. There are help files on ‘how to get them to associate’ with the correct software, if this is a problem. It is different for PC’s and Mac’s.
- Everyone would benefit from viewing the first video linked at the top.
- If you quake at the thought of an Overdrive question this video will calm the shakes!
- The second is for those who wish to offer more advanced troubleshooting.
- There is a third video due to come online Hot Holiday devices 2013 - Prepare for the holiday rush of new users and their devices with a special session covering this season's most popular eReaders, tablets and more. This will come online after the 10th December. Possibly worth a look!

Great to know about the Rough guides used that tip already!!
A few comments on trying to access the CSIRO ebooks on iPad / Galaxy Tab:
- Downloading the ebook to Galaxy Tab or iPad requires install of Bluefire reader app, something we cannot do on staff tablets without Apple ID / permission.
- Without Bluefire, iPad and Galaxy Tab ask do you want to open the epub ebook in Overdrive app, however in Galaxy Tab the downlaod stalls at 0.1% and on iPad an Adobe error message is generated.
- On Galaxy Tab you cannot read the ebook online in default browser, but the Chrome app will work.
- on iPad, Safari browser works fine for viewing ebook online.
So if borrowers want to keep the ebook on their tablet for later offline reading, it appears you need to install Bluefire reader.
Tynelle brought these issues to my attention and I have the same glitches when trying it myself.
